Illustrating Absurdity: Rachel Dolezal wins the “WTF” award

12 06 2015

This is a comedy sketch that’s writing itself. Rachel Dolezal, head of the Spokane chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. has been “passing” as black. She was born Caucasian and raised by two white parents who apparently grew tired of her deception—so they’ve outed her.

I’ll give you a moment to let that sink in.

Armed with pictures and a birth certificate, Lawrence and Ruthanne Dolezal are taking to newspapers, cable and network news shows to let the world know this Black activist who has filed police reports about nine different hate crimes perpetrated against her, who is touted as an academic expert on African-American culture, and teaches African-American studies classes at Eastern Washington University is their estranged daughter who is… white.

After the obvious jokes and the laughter subsides, you then start to think about how many people this fraudulence hurts, not in the least her Caucasian parents.

I explore the role of the feckless N.A.A.C.P. in this mess, and social media reaction over at Communities Digital News: The self-loathing Rachel Dolezal marks the irrelevant N.A.A.C.P.’s demise.

In the meantime, listen to her seemingly shell shocked parents talk about the daughter who has rejected them and her race, because #whitelivesdontmatter.

The Girl’s week has been occupied with interviews of fascinating individuals.

Dr. A. David Matian used to be my primary care physician, and he was honored to be interviewed about his philosophy as a medical professional, and how the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare will affect his practice.

Omar Akram is a talented and accomplished New Age musician, who just released a new album called Daytime Dreamer. At his album release party, I got to cover the red carpet and met some accomplished musicians, authors, and fashionistas.

Shyra Sanchez, actress, singer, fitness coach, activist, and humanitarian sat down with me and her publicist at the Mandarette Cafe, and talked about her music, life vision, and why she will always stay connected to a metropolis.

Lance Lindahl and Credere Joseph met me at the Village Bakery and Cafe, and I got to see firsthand how this connected collaboration of old souls, music, and film helped create the delightful comedy, Hay Days.

Omar, Shyra, Lance and Credere will be featured at Examiner.com on my Faith & Community page. Dr. Matian will be profiled on Examiner.com, and some of his quotes may make it into an article on my Washington Times Communities “In My Orbit” column.

Speaking of of the WT Communities column, this week I discuss President Obama’s non-apology Apology.

“In an effort to get ahead of the narrative (too late), Obama did the one thing at which he is proven effective: he decided to talk. Yet this talk which supposedly included an apology did not express any accountability for lying over 29 times, the current mess those lies are producing, nor did he offer any real solutions to fix it.

If you actually listened to the President’s words, he kept emphasizing the “only 5 percent”, or “a small percentage” of the population that are receiving cancellation notices. By his consistent usage of “only” and “small”, Obama delegitimizes the anger and concern of the people whose policies have been cancelled.”

According to Henry Louis Gates, 388,000 Africans actually survived the Middle Passage and arrived in America to be used as slave labor. That’s less than half a million people. Did that make slavery any less heinous because it was such a small number?

Obamacare is fast becoming an albatross around the President’s neck. Give the rest a read over at the WT Communities site.

Hope you have a fun weekend!

The Obamacare Follies

29 10 2013

obama-then-i-said-if-you-like-your-health-plan-you-can-keep-it

The Girl has been covering the Debacle that is the Obamacare rollout over at my Washington Times Communities column. Click the links below and give them a read.

Will America survive Obamacare’s implementation? This was written two weeks before the October 1 implementation, and some of my commenters scoffed at me. One word: Schadenfreude.

Like comparing Apple to Obamacare. Week 1 of the rollout went exactly as I suspected, and the administration had the nerve to compare themselves to Apple! Cue the laughter.

This is not the Obamacare exchange you were looking for. No kidding… Two weeks later and still a mess.

The Obamacare exchange’s lack of security. If you’re an identity thief or a fraudster, the HHS has given you an open invitation with Healthcare.gov and the Navigator program to easily steal from people. Low-hanging fruit.

Conservatives on Obamacare: we told you so. Yeah… enough said.

Back in February, Stephen Dinan of the Washington Times reported on the seven million who would lose the employer-based health insurance under Obamacare. That was the CBO’s conservative estimate. Now that the biological waste matter has finally hit the circular wind conductor, liberals are now losing their minds, along with their health insurance.

CBSNews.com of all places is reporting that 2 million people with individual plans (read: self-employed) have been booted from their health insurance thanks to Obamacare:

“There have been estimates about hundreds of thousands of people losing coverage, CBS News’ Jan Crawford reported on ‘CBS This Morning.’ CBS News has reached out to insurance companies across the country to determine some of the real numbers — and this is just the tip of the iceberg, Crawford said. The people who are opening the letters are shocked to learn they can’t keep their insurance policies despite President Obama’s assurances to the contrary.

“The White House is on the defensive trying to explain it, after Mr. Obama repeatedly said, ‘If you like your doctor or health care plan, you can keep it.'”

Obamacare: more than 2 million people being booted from existing health insurance plans.

The New Yorker–another publication that could not be described as conservative, brilliantly mashed up the many times our dear President made this promise. Social media cuts both ways.

If You Like Your Plan-Supercut

You didn’t actually think President Obama meant that, did you? If you did, I have some beachfront property in Death Valley I’d like to sell you.

Debra J. Saunders of the San Francisco Gate reports that the head of Covered California estimates up to 900,000 Californians will lose their health plans on December 31. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

So it’s not just the conservatives and Republicans who are calling the Obama administration on the carpet for the lies, now average Americans who are being adversely affected by the implementation of this nightmare are screeching. Amazingly enough, the mainstream outlets are actually doing what Rush Limbaugh likes to call “Random acts of journalism”. Who would have thunk?

Health and Human Services Secy Kathleen Sebelius is scheduled to testify before the the House Commerce Committee on Wednesday. While she planned to throw the technology contractors under the bus, these contractors stole her thunder by leaking to CNN a confidential report essentially saying that the administration had been warned that Healthcare.gov was not ready for primetime; but they charged ahead anyway. Hubris, thy name is HHS.

The Carney is doing his usual doublespeak and blame, but this time nobody is buying it. He has actually been getting tough questions from the White House press corps. Even the usual shills like Matthews and Co. over at MSNBC seem to be waking from their Kool-Aid hangovers on this one.

The plot thickens, and with Sebelius’ testimony, there will be much to write about. In the meantime, I leave you with two more videos that illustrate the lies, incompetence, and rank arrogance that characterizes this presidency.

In My Orbit: the legacy of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

Over 200,00 marchers met on the Mall that day in 1963–are we honoring and living up to the legacy? Some are, others not so much (Wikimedia/USIA)

The Girl has been bouncing around her universe and the country, so the Blog has been a bit neglected. Sorry about that, and I plan to do better, even if it means shorter posts.

We are approaching the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. These types of milestones always get me reflective, as well as watching PBS and other documentaries like an obsessed person. My Washington Times Communities column does a bit of reflecting on what the legacy of this pivotal Civil Rights march means, and gives props to Don Lemon of CNN, and writer Danielle Belton for their perspectives. Give it a read.

Who I don’t give props to is Oprah Winfrey, and Russell Simmons. Oprah’s naked efforts at self-promotion with pegging a clerk’s supposed refusal to let her see a $39,000 purse as racism jumped the shark. Then to pretend she didn’t want to mention the name of the shop so as not to draw negative attention to them? You are frickin’ Oprah–the mere mention of it from your lips already did this. I am so glad that the shop owner and the clerk challenged her racism gripe. The whole brouhaha served its purpose, to promote her latest project, “The Butler”. I’ll wait for Redbox or DirectTV thank you very much. Way to go, Oprah: not only are you an entitled baby, but a poor example of honoring the legacy.

Russell Simmons ups the ante on Oprah by allowing a “Harriet Tubman sex video” on his All Def Digital YouTube site. Also an entitled baby, on top of being ridiculous and misogynistic, Simmons ultimately had the video taken down because his “buddies” at the NAACP asked him. Real big of you…

Simmons non-apology:

“‘I’m a very liberal person with thick skin,” wrote Simmons. “My first impression of the Harriet Tubman piece was that it was about what one of actors said in the video, that 162 years later, there’s still tremendous injustice. And with Harriet Tubman outwitting the slave master? I thought it was politically correct. Silly me. I can now understand why so many people are upset. I have taken down the video. Lastly, I would never condone violence against women in any form, and for all of those I offended, I am sincerely sorry.'”

Pathetic.

But the NAACP takes the cake. A rodeo clown at the Missouri State Fair chose to don an Obama mask and mock the President. In poor taste? Probably. A hate crime? Doubtful. Rodeo clowns have done the same thing to former Presidents George H.W., Clinton, and George W. so was it hate speech when they did it to them? Michelle Malkin takes it one step further by reminding us of the truly hateful speech and imagery directed at President George W. Bush during his eight years. So please, NAACP, cry me a river…

It took a Texas senator to call this group on the carpet for its inconsistency on what issues they choose to become outraged about:

“’A rodeo clown is really a nominal thing and it hurt no one,’ Stockman told FoxNews.com. ‘They didn’t speak out when George Bush was being portrayed as a murderer. To become relevant again, they need to become more of an honest broker and not have contrived anger.’

Stockman said the NAACP would better serve its constituents by focusing on ways to decrease unemployment among the black community. He also noted that the national civil rights group was silent after a July incident on a Florida bus where three black teens beat a fellow white student.”

Ouch. That must have stung.

In My Orbit: A viral article and CNN

I talked to my dear friend Anna last night and said to her “I could not have scripted this day.”

That would be yesterday (Friday), when my morning was supposed to begin teaching a 6:30 am Yoga class. My alarm did not go off, so I woke up at 6 am–the time I’m supposed to be at the studio. Through my ingrained pre-planning (thank you, Mom) and Los Angeles traffic being non-existent (yes, Jesus lives!), I made it to my Yoga studio in 15 minutes, and was still able to teach the class. I’m grateful for that, as I wouldn’t want to disappoint the students–I know how important it is to start your day centered.

Unfortunately, I did not get that luxury!

I had no idea when I wrote my usual Washington Times Communities article on Thursday night that it would go viral. Rachel Jeantel’s testimony in the George Zimmerman murder trial was a hot topic for all the wrong reasons, and I wanted to speak to what I felt the heart of the issue should be. I took great pains to be consistent in writing a good story that I was passionate about, and attempted to file on time, knowing that I had a packed morning the next day.

Within an hour of my posting the piece, my editor emailed me to say it was trending at 2,495 hits. I was surprised, but immediately dismissed it, as I had to go to bed so that I could be rested for that early morning class.

After the eventful morning, I came home to a mailbox full of comments from the Communities page, on Twitter, and on Facebook.  That didn’t include the comments from “Shares” done by Twitter followers and Facebook friends to their pages.

I figured I would sit down, respond to what I could, and start writing an article for my other gig, Examiner.com. The best laid plans of mice and men…

My phone rang, and the Caller ID said “CNN” with a 212 area code. I thought, Seriously? This can’t be… but I picked up the call, and it indeed was. A producer from the Erin Burnett Outfront show asked if I could be a part of a panel. I let her know I needed to check with my editor and I would get back to her. My editor did not hesitate in approving this (she was over the moon about it), so I immediately called the producer back and said it was go. Wish everything went that quickly in Hollywood!

Two hours later, I was picked up by a car service, whisked to the CNN building on Sunset Boulevard, put in a make up chair, seated in a black box studio, and fitted with a mike and earpiece for the show. Ten minutes later, it was done.

For those interested, here’s a brief snippet of the panel:

Erin Burnett Outfront CNN Panel: Zimmerman Witness on Trial?

I was thanked for my time, the car service whisked me home and it was back to Friday as usual.

Or… not. The story is still striking a chord, and the commentary continues to come in, especially after the CNN appearance. Some positive, a lot of negative, some downright ridiculous. I hope the conversation grows stronger, and goes toward making a difference in how we train our children for the world.

I’m still bemused by the whole thing, almost like viewing it from a dream state–but it’s quite real. I was especially humbled by a woman’s comment on Twitter: “Brilliant. No words.  I’ve printed it out for our daughters. Sometimes it’s ‘easier’ hearing it from someone other than a parent.”

You become a writer to express your voice, and have an influence. It is quite sobering to see when you’ve done just that.

A friend just messaged me to check in to see how I’m doing, for which I am very grateful. He said, “Most people only talk about cultural influence…you actually did it… Hang in there boss.”

Hanging in. We’ll see where the next wave lands.

The Los Angeles Mayor’s Race, aka the Real Candidates of L.A. City (Part 1)

6 05 2013

collage

The Girl is less than thrilled over this Los Angeles Mayor’s race for obvious reasons: Kevin James did not make the runoff. He was the only Conservative running for the office, and whatever Conservative/Republican base we have left in Los Angeles decided not to show up at the polls. The apathy in this town is thicker than the smog.

So we are stuck with Wendy Greuel and Eric Garcetti, Liberal vs. Liberal City Council retreads, trying to out spend each other, and inspire the voting base to actually get out to the polls on May 21. Good luck with that….

My latest Washington Times Communities article talks about the overabundance of charisma that the departing Mayor Smilin’ Tony exuded–with little else besides that–and the lack of that same charisma exhibited from either of the two candidates:

“Villaraigosa clearly represents where we have come: the reality televisionization of politics. Substance no longer matters—give us drama, bigger-than-life personalities, and some good fights. Rome may be burning, but if you look good, and spin a good yarn while it happens, who cares? As this is the town that creates all those illusions in the first place, it should come as no surprise that L.A. is the poster child of the celebrity Mayor.”

Read the rest here.

Speaking of drama, Wendy Greuel appears to have a penchant for it. My man Kevin has already endorsed Eric Garcetti, in part because Garcetti is not completely bought and paid for by the city unions, like the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. LADWP has already poured millions into Greuel’s campaign, and will probably continue to do so up until the day of the election.

What’s that phrase? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned ? Apparently Wendy’s fury is now directed at Mr. Kevin James.

A recent direct-mail campaign targeted at the African-American and Latino communities highlights, “Garcetti’s endorsement from white Republican Kevin James, who finished third in the March 5 primary.”

“‘He’s an Obama hater!'” the mailer says, highlighting some of James’ more intemperate remarks about the president. ‘Say no to Eric Garcetti! He sold us out to win Republican votes!'”

Beware the power of technology, Wendy. The Kevin James for Mayor website has posted the text messages between Wendy and Kevin, not too long after the primary election results. From my read, Wendy is practically chasing down Kevin for his endorsement. Of course, when she did not get it, suddenly Kevin is an evil monster who is racist, white (shock!), and right-wing.

It seems that Wendy knows how to go on the attack, but aside from being a woman, doesn’t rate at doing much else. Mayor Sam has documented well on his blog Ms. Greuel’s attacks against those she considers opponents, bombastic overreach during her years of “public service” , and constant grandstanding. I recommend giving it a read before you make a decision on who you will vote for on May 21.

And take a gander at this video posted by NearChaosBlog, basically confirming what we all fear: the woman has neither the ethics or experience to manage a city; she’s simply a rubber-stamped union toady, who wants to ride into office playing the female card. Joy.

Next week, Candidate Garcetti comes under the microscope.

Epic Fail: About that “Laser Focus” on Jobs…

31 01 2013

Obama Fail

Today marks the official demise of President Obama’s Jobs Council. U.S. News reports that:

“When Obama in January 2011 formed his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, unemployment was hovering above 9 percent. Two years president later, more than 12 million people in the U.S. are out of work. The unemployment rate has improved to 7.8 percent, but both parties agree that’s still too high.”

Obama’s Jobs Council Shutting Down on Thursday

Investors Business Daily doesn’t bother to sugar coat, laying out the real skinny on unemployment in America and the failure of this President to either stem the tide of job loss  or get out of the way of job creation:

“Officially, some 23 million people don’t have regular work. While official unemployment has dipped below 8%, the real unemployment rate — the one that counts discouraged workers and those who’d like full-time jobs but can’t find one — is 14.4%.

Yes, we know, this is a tired litany. And yet, have we become as a people so inured to Obama’s failure that we no longer take note of it?

Worse, do we just do nothing, letting Obama’s ruinous Keynesian experiments take their course?”

Obama’s Cynical “Laserlike Focus” on Jobs Turns to Lack of Interest

So what happened to that “Laser Focus”? I surmise that it wasn’t there in the first place, even though he loved putting it in speeches. This fine citizen presents news footage of President Pompous declaring no less than six times how he was now going to pivot and focus on jobs in his administration.

Really, it’s all about political expediency versus political demagoguery, and Obama will always choose demagoguery over the former. I don’t call this the Smokes and Mirrors Presidency for nothing. Whatever gives the illusion that “important work” is being done, while the work of killing the economy, cutting job creators off at the knees, and creating a permanent underclass is cemented behind the scenes.

Supposed Immigration Reform and Gun Control are hot button issues that allow him to speechify, posture, and play well with the sycophant news media. While actual work to eliminate policies that hamper individual freedoms and kill business are never undertaken. With more looming draconian tax codes courtesy of the monster Obamacare, we are guaranteed to see little increase in job creation, more layoffs, and more part-time jobs “McJobs” that offer little in terms of growth or benefits.

Welcome to your second term–don’t say you were not warned.
